Volunteer

This is the my Volunteer page where I keep a record of all the activities I do in the 3 months for this part of my 'D of E' award.

I will be volunteering at '1st Bude Scout troop' as a young leader. This means I will have to complete various modules of the Scouting Organisation's Young leaders scheme, basic first aid training and help with the planning and running of scout evenings.

Saturday 3rd November
I went to Bude scout hut at 1pm for 2 and a half hours to complete Module A 'Prepare For Take Off' of the young leader scheme. Bude scouts training. ran the training. We had to look at the structure of and roles of adults in the organisation from Leaders to County Commissioners and how we as young leaders fit in to it. The ratios of leader/helpers of the different age groups:

  • 1 leader : 6 Children in Beavers (aged 6-8)
  • 1 leader : 8 Children in Cubs (8-101/2)
  • 1 leader : 12 Children in Scouts (101/2-14)
Although we are there to help we are included in number of children as we are not over 18. We had to learn about child protection and POR(Policy, Organisation and Rules) and we were given  the 'Orange Card' with the Young People First code of good practise written on it. Finally we were shown several case studies to do with health and safety and we had to comment on safety issues and precautions in 2 of the videos.

We had then completed Module A and went Home

Thursday 8th November
7-9pm I helped supervise the scouts while they were cooking. It was a cooking challenge in three groups. They had to make french toast, hot dog and decorate a fairy cake to put with custard for each person in the group. I had to make sure they were safe and give them advise on hows best to cook it.

Thursday 15th November
7-9pm the scouts made patrol emblems/mascots out of clay, they also had lego to build with and has an air fix model per patrol. I helped one patrol make their airfix model.

Thursday 21st November
the original activity was canceled due to the weather so they played boardgames.

Thursday 29th November
first aid evening. They had a fully trained first responder come in and teach CPR and about defibrilators. they where also taught the recovery position and different badges and how to use them properly.
